Well, this was a bit of a disappointment because I was hoping this test would be the finished square. Still pleased with the brick pattern, but as I progressed on this one, I could see that the colour balance was still off. Seen from Dulwich Road – and that’s the point of this work – the Lido wall is predominantly dark red, however much variation there is closer up.
Resources & what I did
Same as for Test 2, but with much less of the Peach and a return of Shadow , this time with a bigger role. I variegated the bricks as far as I could, which I really like, but this hasn’t captured the essence of the Lido wall from Dulwich Road. Part of the difficulty is using only two shades for each row of bricks, but the knitting is already quite complex and I don’t want to add another element.
What needs to change
- Overdid it with Shadow, so while it needs to be here I have to roll it back again.
- The Peach remains too harsh.
For the final square
- The majority of the bricks must be Barn Red, with just one or two bricks of the contrast shade in each row.
- Use Rose Quartz as the more predominant contrast.
- Use Shadow more sparingly, and Peach only on small bricks – or remove entirely.
- If the next test is an improvement I will complete it as the final square. If it proves less effective or less attractive than Test 3, I will abandon it, undo the cast-off on Test 3 and complete that as the final. There comes a point!
